SMCC Beach Volleyball Wins Top Court in Inaugural Match

The South Mountain Community College women's beach volleyball team (0-1) competed in its first duel ever, facing Mesa Community College at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, April 16. Although the Cougars ultimately fell 3-1 to the Thunderbirds, sophomore Marlayna Stapleton and freshman Mckenna Androsky won in straight sets in their match on the No. 1 court to give the pair the first match victory in school history.
Playing in the top-seeded match, Stapleton and Androsky won 22-20 and 21-12 to give SMCC and head coach Melissa Hess the Cougars' first dual point.
In the No. 2 contest, Alyssa McDowell and Mikaila Williams fell in straight sets. The pair battled to a 21-15, 21-18 defeat.
At the No.3 court, Claire Burford and Madison Davis also fell in straight sets. They lost 21-19 and 21-15 in their first match as a duo.
The Cougars and Thunderbirds will meet again at Kiwanis Park on Friday, April 30 for a noon duel.
