SMCC Baseball Battles Yavapai College to Doubleheader Split

The South Mountain Community college baseball team (29-14, 23-13 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader with Yavapai College on April 27. The Cougars won the first game 4-3 (7) before falling 11-7 in the second contest. In the first game, Justin Quinn went 2-for-3 with a double, Carter Krosky tossed five to earn the win and Shawn Triplett recorded a two-inning save in the win. In the second game, Dustin Bermudez had a pair of RBIs, and Andrew Lucas scored two runs, but the Roughriders scored six runs over the final two innings to split the twin-bill. 

Game One

The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held off a Yavapai rally to earn the win. 

Quinn finished 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI, a sacrifice bunt and a double, while Brice Martinez scored a pair of runs and stole a base. Gillis Champagne scored the team's fourth run and Paul Sachen and Brodie Marino each had a base hit.

Krosky (6-3) had two strikeouts and worked around six hits and a walk to earn his sixth win of the season. Triplett recorded his conference-leading 11th save of the year with 2.0 innings of relief with three strikeouts and an unearned run. 

Game Two

Seven different Cougars had a base hit, but Yavapai posted the comeback victory. SMCC tied the game at 1-1. in the fourth, and the teams exchanged four-run sixth innings. The Cougars then scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. However, the Roughriders scored four runs in the eighth and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. 

Five Cougars scored a run in the loss: Holden BreezeMcKay BarneyMichael Quinones, Bermudez and Esteban Hernandez. Quinn, Hernandez and Champagne had a stolen base in the loss. 

Matt Bohnert started for SMCC and tossed 5.0 innings. He had seven strikeouts to go with five hits and two walks. TJ Czyz tossed 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts and two hits, Ben Meyerson added an inning of relief with a strikeout, and Alec StanfieldRyan Figueroa and Drew Woody saw time in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Cougars host Pima CC in a pivotal ACCAC doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, in the 2021 regular-season home finale. The first game starts at noon.
