Cougars Defeat Chandler-Gilbert CC in Non-Conference Contest

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (3-2) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC in a non-conference contest at CGCC on Tuesday, Feb. 1. The Cougars broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth, and the bullpen did not allow a hit over the final six innings.

In the fourth, sophomore Nick Wallerstedt took over for SMCC starter Robert Schardt and retired the side in order. Schardt went three innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs.

Sophomore Drew Woody then tossed a quiet fifth inning to pick up his first win of the season. Sophomore Alec Stanfield tossed two innings with two strikeouts, sophomore Esteban Hernandez threw a quick eighth, and freshman Matthew Martinez recorded his first save with two strikeouts. 

At the plate, freshman Jayden Smith recorded his third multi-hit game of the year with a 2-for-3 performance. He scored two runs and walked once. Redshirt freshman Easton Erwin had a base hit and scored a run, while freshman Carter Richey and sophomore Taylor Tractenberg had an RBI. Freshman Brian Leon roped his first double of the season, and freshman Josaiah Estrella successfully executed a sacrifice bunt.
