SMCC Men's Basketball Holds Walk-On Tryouts on Aug. 25

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team and head coach Dan Nichols will hold walk-on tryouts for the upcoming 2022-23 season on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. in the SMCC Gym. Interested parties must be full-time students at South Mountain Community College.
Forty-Three SMCC Student-Athletes Earn 2021-22 NJCAA All-Academic Honors

A total of 43 South Mountain Community College student-athletes earned 2021-22 NJCAA All-Academic honors for their work in the classroom. The SMCC women's golf team received NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors after posting a cumulative 3.65 team GPA, and the Cougars had 10 student-athletes earn First Team awards after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Darien Allen Earns Third Team All-ACCAC Honors

Freshman Darien Allen earned Third Team All-ACCAC honors for the 2021-22 season, the conference office announced. A 6-5 forward from Columbia, Mo., Allen 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game for the Cougars.
SMCC Hoops Knocks Off Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (14-16, 8-12 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 62-61 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home contest on Feb. 22. The Cougars held off a Coyote rally as sophomore Elijah Melendez led three Cougars in double-figures with a team-high 18 points.
SMCC Men's Basketball Posts Home Victories over Phoenix College, Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (13-16, 7-12 ACCAC) defeated Phoenix College 74-61 on Feb. 18 and Central Arizona College 78-70 on Feb. 19 in a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home games. Freshman Darien Allen led the Cougars with 20 points in the win over the Bears, and sophomore Elijah Melendez added 14 as SMCC overcame a 35-30 halftime deficit. Against the Vaqueros, Melendez scored a team-high 25 points as SMCC rallied in the second half for their second-straight home win.
Arizona Western Defeats SMCC Men's Hoops

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-16, 5-12 ACCAC) lost 87-55 at Arizona Western on Feb. 16 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest in Yuma, Ariz. Sophomore Isaiah Camon led the Cougars with 15 points. Sophomore Elijah Melendez added 12, but the Matadors jumped out to an early lead and held off any SMCC rally.
Cougar Men's Hoops Falls to Cochise College

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-15, 5-11 ACCAC) lost 105-61 to Cochise College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home contest on Feb. 9. Sophomore Elijah Melendez scored a team-high nine points, but SMCC struggled from the field in the loss to the Apaches.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-14, 5-10 ACCAC) lost 70-58 at Chandler-Gilbert CC in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Feb. 7. Elijah Melendez led the Cougars with 16 points and Shawn Black and Darien Allen added 11, but the Cougars could not stave off a Coyote comeback in the second half.
Cougar Men's Basketball Posts Home Wins over Eastern Arizona, Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team posted a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contests at Cougar Gym. The Cougars defeated Eastern Arizona 92-65 on Feb. 2, and posted a 91-85 victory over Pima CC on Feb. 5. Sophomore Elijah Melendez scored a team-high 20 points against the Gila Monsters, and sophomore Demonte Demore scored a team-high 26 points in the win against the Aztecs.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 80-73 at Scottsdale Community College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Jan. 29, 2022. Sophomore Demonte Demore scored a team-high 20 points and freshman Darien Allen added 15, but the Cougars could not overcome a seven-point halftime deficit.
SMCC Men's Hoops Rallies for OT Win at Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (9-12, 3-8 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 76-70 in overtime Wednesday night in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road contest. Trailing by nine at halftime, the Cougars forced the extra frame with a strong second half (39-30) and then won the contest in overtime.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (8-11, 2-7 ACCAC) lost 70-63 at Central Arizona in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest in Coolidge, Ariz., on Jan. 12. Sophomore Elijah Melendez led the Cougars with 15 points and knocked down three 3-pointers while sophomore Demonte Demore added 11 points and freshman Darien Allen finished with 10.

Men's Hoops Wraps Up Busy December with Victories at PC Holiday Classic

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (8-9, 2-5 ACCAC) wrapped up a busy December with two victories at the Phoenix College Holiday Classic. At the event, the Cougars defeated Bismarck State College on Dec. 29 (57-54) and Dream City Prep on Dec. 30 (65-55) after narrowly falling to Bella Vista Post Grad (72-70) in overtime on Dec. 28. Earlier in the month, SMCC fell 99-83 at Pima CC on Dec. 8 and 104-72 at Cochise College on Dec. 11 in a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest.

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (6-6, 2-3 ACCAC) rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Eastern Arizona 67-66 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest in Thatcher, Ariz., on Dec. 4. Four Cougar starters finished in double-figures in the victory, led by sophomore Demonte Demore's 16 points.
