Cougars Post Double Overtime Victory Over Gateway CC

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team defeated Gateway Community College 2-1 in double overtime in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Oct. 18. Freshman Marco Amador broke the deadlock with a golden goal in the 109th minute to lift the Cougars to their first victory of the 2022 campaign. 

Tied 1-1 late in the second and final overtime, Amador gathered the ball to the left of the goal and fired a low shot into the far netting at 108:36. The goal was Amador's team-leading fifth of the season. 

Gateway CC opened the scoring in the 37th minute off the foot of Luis Toledo. Ahmari Robinson and Noel Ochoa Galindo assisted on the goal. 

The Cougars tied the match in the 64th minute as Jason Diaz Mara finished off a cross from Kevin Tejada. The goal was Diaz Mara's third of the year, and Tejada produced his second assist.

Max Melendez started the game in goal for SMCC, and he recorded two saves in 45 minutes. Jason Martinez played the rest of the match in the net and posted three saves to earn the victory. 

SMCC held a narrow 17-15 advantage in shots, and the Cougars put 11 attempts on frame. The teams combined for 51 fouls, seven yellow cards and two red cards.
