SMCC Men's Volleyball Embraces Process in Year One

The South Mountain Community College men’s volleyball team has experienced some of the growing pains associated with the first year of an intercollegiate athletics sport. Players have come and gone. The schedule is filled primarily with four-year universities that boast better resources and more experience. And through it all, the Cougars and head coach Patrick Mooney would not want it any other way.

The South Mountain Community College men’s volleyball team will begin its inaugural season in 2022 with a Jan. 20 home contest at 6 p.m. against Park-Gilbert.  Led by head coach Pat Mooney, the Cougars will play 12 matches this spring with seven home contests.

Longtime South Mountain Community College volleyball coach Patrick Mooney has been named the head coach of the SMCC men's volleyball and beach volleyball programs, SMCC Athletic Director Todd Eastin announced. The former head coach of the SMCC women's indoor program for 13 years, Mooney also serves as an assistant coach for that program and works as the athletic department's academic advisor.

South Mountain Community College to Add Men’s Volleyball to Intercollegiate Offerings

Through a $10,000 grant provided by the NJCAA Foundation and First Point Volleyball Foundation, the South Mountain Community College athletic department will sponsor men’s volleyball as a varsity sport beginning in the spring 2022 season. An emerging sport with growing participation throughout the state of Arizona and the nation, Cougar men’s volleyball will provide opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the intercollegiate level and the prospect to continue their careers at four-year institutions.
