No. 13 SMCC Softball Falls Twice to Phoenix College in Home Finale

PHOENIX ---

The No. 13 South Mountain Community College softball team (25-11, 25-9 ACCAC) lost twice to No. 1 Phoenix College on Saturday, May 8, in the Cougars' 2021 home finale. Mia Stankiewicz had an RBI double in the first game, but SMCC lost 11-1 in five innings. In the second contest, Alexa Key had a pair of base hits, but the Bears posted a 9-3 victory.

Game One

Stankiewicz finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double, and Alexa Key scored a run, but three Cougar errors gave the Bears six unearned runs in the five-inning loss.

Trailing 3-0 in the first, Stankiewicz ripped a double, her 18th of the season, and brought home Key, who had earlier stolen her league-leading 35th stolen base of the season, to cut the Bears' lead to 3-1.

However, that would be as close as the Cougars would get, and Phoenix College scored multiple runs in four of the game's five innings.

Jackie Traughber (15-6) took the loss for SMCC in the circle. She tossed all five innings and had two strikeouts. She also had the Cougars' fourth base hit.

Game Two

In the second game, the Bears scored three times in the first inning and added multiple runs in the third and sixth.

Key finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Traughber and Stankiewicz also scored for SMCC. Tori Van Arsdale went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Tara Lorona recorded her 10th double of the season.

Christian Smith tossed all seven innings for SMCC, and the loss dropped her record to 10-5 for the season. She had five strikeouts to raise her season total to 54 K's.

SMCC is the second seed in the NJCAA Region I Division II Tournament, held at Phoenix College from May 13-15. We will post more information on the tournament as it becomes available.
