Epic Comeback Defines SMCC Sweep of Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College softball team (16-10, 9-7 ACCAC) defeated Arizona Western 7-4 and 12-11 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on Mar. 8. Kate HoganMonica Chon and Annalise Chavez blasted home runs, and Christian Smith won her seventh game of the year in the first game. In the second game, SMCC overcame an 11-4 deficit in the bottom of the seventh and scored eight runs to post the walk-off victory.

Game One Recap

The Cougars 4-1 lead through four innings and scored runs in the fifth and six after the Matadors tied the game.

Smith (7-4) tossed six innings and scattered seven hits, and one earned run to pick up the win. She had a pair of strikeouts and walked one. Mariah Martinez tossed a clean seventh inning to post her fourth save of the season.

Tara LoronaCarolina Olivas and Hogan had two hits in the victory. Lorona was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a stolen base, while Olivas recorded an RBI.

In the sixth inning, Hogan blasted her sixth home run of the season and added two RBIs, a triple and a stolen base. Chon and Chavez also hit solo home runs, going back-to-back in the fifth.

Game Two Recap

In a stunning comeback, the Cougars scored seven times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to post a 12-11 win over the Matadors.

After a double play where Kayliana Sablan scored a run, the Cougars strung together hits and walks to push another run across before Jaudrey Ah Quin blasted a grand slam to bring the score to 11-10. Olivas, Sablan and Taylor Mount then reached to load the bases for Hogan, who roped a two-run single up the middle to record the walk-off victory.

Martinez led the Cougars with three hits, and Sablan, Chon and Ah Quin had two hits. Martinez finished with 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs and her eighth home run of the season. Ah Quin finished with four RBIs and her seventh home run of the season.

Sablan finished 2-for-4 with three runs and a stolen base, and Hogan drove in three runs to go with a double and a sacrifice fly. Chon scored a run, and Chavez scored a pair of runs and added a double.

Martinez (5-3) also recorded the win in the circle with three innings of relief. She worked around seven hits and posted a pair of strikeouts. Rylie Atherton started the game for SMCC and had three K's in four innings of work.
