Sixth-Inning Rallies Send SMCC Past Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (22-10, 13-9 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 12-8 and 9-6 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on Mar. 22. The Cougars used a pair of sixth-inning rallies to sweep the doubleheader against the Artichokes. Lauren Russell hit a pair of doubles, and Mariah Martinez added a key home run in the first game, and Tara Lorona produced a critical 2-run double to propel SMCC in the second contest. 

Game One Recap

The Artichokes scored two runs in the third and added three in the fifth to take a 5-0 advantage. The Cougars responded with three runs in the fifth, and after SCC hit a solo home run, scored nine runs in the sixth to take a 12-8 advantage into the seventh. The Artichokes plated a pair of runs before SMCC recorded the final out to secure the victory.

Christian Smith (10-3) earned the win with a complete game in the circle. She allowed eight hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. 

Taylor MountKate Hogan, Lorona, and Russell had two hits in the win. Russell had a pair of doubles, and Hogan added a triple, a stolen base and two RBIs, while Lorona scored a pair of runs and Mount had an RBI and a steal.  

Martinez hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season and finished with two RBIs. Carolina Olivas went 1-for-3 with two runs, a triple, a stolen base and three RBIs. 

Game Two Recap

The Artichokes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second and led 5-0 in the fourth before SMCC started its rally. The Cougars scored a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the sixth to post the 9-6 comeback victory. 

Hogan, Lorona and Kayliana Sablan had two hits in the Cougar victory. Hogan hit her eighth home run of the year and finished 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a walk. Lorona hit her 10th double of the year and added two RBIs and a run scored, while Sablan had a run, an RBI and a stolen base. 

Mount added her fifth double of the year and scored two runs, and Annalise Chavez and Martinez recorded RBIs.

Martinez (7-3) earned the win in the circle with four innings of relief. She struck out two and allowed four hits and an earned run. Rylie Atherton started the game for SMCC and had two K's in three innings of work.
