SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader against PVCC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (27-19, 18-16 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley CC 13-3 (5) and 11-7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on April 16. Taylor Mount and Kate Hogan led the Cougars with multi-hit performances in the first game, and SMCC smacked eight extra-base hits in the second contest to sweep the twinbill. 

Game One Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Pumas scored three in the second to cut the deficit to one run. The score remained the same until the fifth when the Cougars exploded for nine runs to produce the run-rule victory. SMCC finished with 12 hits in the 13-3, five-inning win. 

Mount was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, a stolen base and a double, while Hogan was 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs, two stolen bases and a double. 

Monica Chon and Jaudrey Ah Quin hit home runs in the victory. Chon blasted a two-run home run, and Ah Quin added a solo shot and scored a pair of runs. 

Kayliana Sablan and Tara Lorona added doubles for SMCC, with Sablan scoring a pair of runs. 

Christian Smith (13-6) earned the win with 3.1 innings of one-hit relief work. She fanned four to record her 13th win of the season. Mariah Martinez started the game for SMCC and allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars scored five runs in the first and led 7-1 after their half of the fourth. PVCC rallied for three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie the contest before SMCC scored four runs in the sixth to break the deadlock.

Five Cougars posted multi-hit efforts in the 11-7 victory, and Mount and Lorona finished with three hits apiece. Mount was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Lorona went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs and two doubles. 

Carolina Olivas had a pair of doubles and two runs scored, and Hogan went 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a double and a stolen base. 

Lauren Russell was the fifth Cougar with multiple hits as she finished 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Annalise Chavez had an RBI double, and Ah Quin tripled and scored. 

Rylie Atherton (7-6) earned the win with 3.1 innings of work, as she fanned nine and allowed four earned runs. Smith recorded her second save of the season with 3.2 innings of relief work. She had two K's and allowed three earned runs.
