Chandler-Gilbert, SMCC Softball Split Twinbill

The South Mountain Community College softball team (28-20, 19-17 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert CC on April 19. The Coyotes scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a 16-8, five-inning victory in the first game. In the second game, SMCC jumped out to a 5-0 after one inning and scored nine over the final two frames to post a 17-9, six-inning win. 

Game One Recap

CGCC scored eight runs in the first, but SMCC pulled to within 8-6 after two innings. However, the Coyotes responded with two runs in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to post a 16-8 win in five innings. 

Jaudrey Ah Quin and Kayliana Sablan had a pair of hits for the Cougars. Sablan scored a run and hit a double, while Ah Quin singled twice. 

Lauren Russell and Mariah Martinez homered in the loss. Russell roped a three-run blast in a five-run Cougar first, and Martinez hit a two-run home run, drew two walks and scored a pair of runs. 

Tara Lorona and Taylor Mount produced doubles for the Cougars, with Lorona driving in three and Mount scoring a run. Kate Hogan added a base hit and scored a pair of runs. 

Christian Smith (13-7) took the loss in the circle, allowing eight runs. Martinez tossed the final four frames and had three K's. 

Game Two Recap 

SMCC jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings, and after CGCC pulled to within 8-7, the Cougars scored nine runs over the final two frames to secure the six-inning victory. 

Lorona, Russell and Annalise Chavez led SMCC with three hits. Chavez hit a pair of two-run home runs and finished 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs. Lorona roped a three-run triple, stole a base and scored three times, and Russell also scored three times, hit a double and added an RBI. 

Hogan and Monica Chon collected doubles in the win. Hogan finished 2-for-2 with a run, three RBIs and two walks, while Chon drove in a run and added a sac bunt. 

Mount went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored, and Sablan scored three times and picked up an RBI. Ah Quin scored twice, and Martinez drove in a pair. 

Rylie Atherton (8-6) picked up the win with five innings of work in the circle. She fanned two and allowed seven earned runs. Smith recorded her third save with an inning of hitless relief.
