No. 10 SMCC Softball Extends Winning Streak with Sweep of PVCC

The No. 10 South Mountain Community College softball team (14-3, 13-1 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley CC 17-2 (5 innings) and 8-4 in an ACCAC road doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Cougars smacked three home runs and two doubles in the game one win and added four doubles and one home run in the game two victory as SMCC extended its winning streak to 12-straight conference games. 

Game One Recap

SMCC finished with 18 hits as seven Cougars posted multi-hit performances in the 17-2, five-inning victory. The Cougars scored multiple runs in every inning, including eight runs in the opening frame. 

Sophomore Rebecca Miller and freshmen Brianna Garcia and Iliana Munoz each had three hits in the win. The team's starting catcher, Miller finished 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs, a double and a home run. Garcia was 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, a stolen base, a home run and a double, while Munoz went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. 

Sophomore Makaiya Gomez hit the team's third home run and finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Sophomores Jessica Gordon and Anisa Reynolds and freshman Mia Franco had two hits for SMCC. Franco scored a pair of runs and had an RBI, Reynolds scored twice with an RBI and a walk, and Gordon scored twice and drove in a pair. 

Freshman Angelica Tello improved to 6-0 on the season with a complete-game performance in the circle. She fanned two, walked two and allowed one earned run in six innings of work. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars continued to swing a hot bat as they amassed 15 hits in the 8-4 win. SMCC led 4-1 after two innings, and after PVCC cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth, the Cougars added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to secure the win. 

Garcia led the SMCC with another three hits, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and two doubles. She is batting .552 with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 17 games this season. 

Sophomores Annalise Chavez, Reynolds and Miller had two hits for SMCC. Chavez had an RBi, Reynolds scored two runs and drove in a pair, and Miller had a couple of singles. 

Freshman Sarah Potter also had two hits and drove in a run, and Gomez had a double, two runs and two walks. Freshman Halle Hogan hit her third home run of the season, scored twice, and drove in a pair.  

Freshman Mykenzie Flores improved to 3-0 on the year with six innings of work. She fanned a pair and allowed four earned runs. Reynolds tossed the seventh and struck out two.
