No. 5 SMCC Softball Sweeps Paradise Valley CC

The No. 5 South Mountain Community College softball team (40-7, 34-4 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley CC 8-2 and 16-0 (5 innings) in an ACCAC doubleheader at the Cougar Diamond on April 15. Freshman Brianna Garcia had a pair of doubles and two RBIs, and freshman Halle Hogan went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the game one victory. In the second game, freshman Mia Franco, sophomore Jessica Gordon and Hogan homered as SMCC rolled to a run-rule win. 

Game One Recap

SMCC led 4-0, but the Pumas posted two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to help secure the victory. 

Garcia recorded her team-leading 19th and 20th doubles of the year in the win, adding two RBIs and a run scored. Hogan added a stolen base to her three singles, two runs and two RBIs. 

Sophomore Annalise Chavez had a pair of singles and scored twice, and sophomore Makaiya Gomez scored three runs with two hits, two walks and a stolen base. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds recorded a pair of sacrifice flies, and Franco had a single and an RBI. 

In the circle, freshman Angelica Tello improved to 14-1 on the season with a complete-game effort. She fanned nine Pumas and worked around five hits and one earned run.  

Game Two Recap 

The Cougar offense scored multiple runs in all four innings en route to the 16-0, five-inning victory over PVCC in game two of the doubleheader. SMCC finished with 15 hits and 15 RBIs in the win. 

Hogan finished a perfect day at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance. She had two doubles, a home run, two runs scored, a stolen base and a season-high six RBIs. Over her last 12 games, Hogan is batting .682 (30/44) with nine doubles, four home runs and 33 RBIs. 

Franco went 1-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and her fifth home run of the season. Gordon blasted a three-run home run, her fourth of the season, to give her 22 RBIs. Garcia scored three runs and added a single, an RBI and two walks. 

Gomez went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and a stolen base, and Reynolds finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Vanessa Philpot had a pair of singles and scored two runs, and freshman Sarah Potter had a single, and a run scored. 

Reynolds improved to 13-3 on the year with a five-inning shutout performance. She allowed one hit and one walk and struck out six.
