PHOENIX ---
The South Mountain Community College softball team (31-14, 23-9 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 5-0 and 16-4 (5 innings) in an ACCAC home doubleheader on April 10. Sophomore Sadie Su'a struck out a career-high 13 batters and allowed one hit in a complete-game shutout, and sophomore Jada Montoya blasted a three-run home run in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Nadia Rascon, sophomore Michelle Balcazar, and freshman Zaybri Franz belted home runs as the Cougars powered to the sweep.
Game One Recap
Su'a dominated the circle, fanning 13 over seven innings to set a new career best. She had struck out 12 batters in two victories over Scottsdale CC earlier this season. She allowed a single in the fifth, hit two batters, and walked one batter to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Montoya broke a scoreless tie in the second with a three-run home run, her second of the season. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio and Su'a scored on the play.
In the fourth, Rascon roped a two-run single to score sophomore Jasmyne Campos and freshman Jerzey Jarvis. Jemio was 2 for 3 with a double, and Jarvis also went 2 for 3 and two stolen bases.
Game Two Recap
The Cougars totaled three home runs, two triples, and a double en route to the 16-4, five-inning victory.
SMCC sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run first. Rascon hit an RBI triple, Jemio added an RBI single, and Balcazar smacked a two-run home run to put SMCC ahead 4-0. Freshman Eva Harrison had an RBI single to score sophomore McKenna Kraft, and she and freshman Zaybri Franz scored on an error off the bat of Jarvis.
After MCC scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, SMCC responded with nine runs in its half. The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs, and Kraft posted an RBI single to score Rascon. That brought up Franz, who hit her second grand slam of the season to put SMCC ahead 12-2.
With two outs, sophomore Elise Saucedo hit an RBI double to score Harrison, and Rascon brought her in with a two-run home run. Freshman Kaeliann Glass added an RBI triple to conclude the scoring.
