SMCC Softball Splits with CGCC to Conclude Regular Season

The South Mountain Community College softball team (36-19, 28-14 ACCAC) split an ACCAC doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC on May 3, winning game one 18-6 (five innings) before falling 16-7 (five innings) in game two. The Cougars smacked three doubles and three triples in the game-one victory, but the Coyotes used a 12-run inning to split the twin bill on the final day of the 2025 regular season.
SMCC now sets its sights on the NJCAA Region I Division II Tournament, which will run May 8-10 at Phoenix College. The Cougars are the No. 3 seed and open their postseason on Thursday, May 8 against No. 2 Pima CC at 10 a.m. The tournament is a double-elimination format and SMCC will play at least one game on Friday, May 9.
Game One Recap
The Cougars scored multiple runs in every inning en route to the 18-6, five-inning victory. SMCC scored five in the first, four in the second, two in the third and fourth, and five more in the fifth.
Three Cougars led the squad with three hits apiece in the victory: Dionna Leanio, Jada Montoya, and Tazia Blake. Leanio was 3 for 5 with a career-high four RBIs, three runs, a triple, and a stolen base, while Montoya finished 3 for 4 with three runs, two RBIs, and a triple. Blake went 3 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double.
Nadia Rascon was 1 for 1 with three doubles, three walks, two RBIs, a stolen base, and a double, and Sarah Potter had the squad's third double and was 2 for 2 with four RBIs and a run.
Kaeliann Glass had the team's third triple and was 2 for 4 with three runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Alyssa Jemio improved to 12-5 on the season with four innings of work in the circle. She allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and two walks with three strikeouts. Kayle James tossed an inning of relief.
Game Two Recap
The Cougars led 7-4 entering the bottom of the fourth, but the Coyotes took advantage of some SMCC errors and scored 12 runs in the frame to lift them to a 16-7, five-inning victory.
Glass and Jemio led SMCC with two hits each. Glass was 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk, while Jemio was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Montoya had a double and finished with an RBI, while Leanio and Rascon scored twice. Eva Harrison, Jessica Wallace, and Sabrina Erran had RBIs in defeat.
Rebekah Mendoza started the game for SMCC and went two innings with four hits, two earned runs, two walks, and a strikeout. James tossed the final two innings and allowed four hits, four earned runs, three walks, plus two K's.
