SMCC Women's Hoops Falls to Southern Nevada, Valley Prep

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (2-3) lost 91-45 to the College of Southern Nevada on Nov. 9 and 88-68 to Valley Prep on Nov. 12 in a pair of non-conference home games at the SMCC Gym. Sophomore Auak Jok led SMCC with 12 points, and sophomore Leslie Aguirre added 11 against the Coyotes. Three days later, sophomore Mualyia Green posted a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds, sophomore Destiny Dixon scored 16, and Aguirre added 15 in the loss to Valley Prep.  

Southern Nevada Recap

CSN led 30-7 after one quarter and took a 51-19 lead into halftime, and the Coyotes outscored the Cougars 40-26 in the second half. SMCC shot 25.7 percent (18 of 70) from the field and totaled 50 rebounds, 11 assists, six steals, and a block. 

Jok finished 5 of 10 from the floor and knocked down two 3-pointers in 36 minutes. She added eight rebounds, six of which were offensive boards, two assists, and a block. 

Aguirre shot 4 of 12 from the floor and made all three free throws. She dished out a team-high six assists and produced four rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes. 

Dixon led SMCC with 10 rebounds and added six points, two steals, and an assist in 38 minutes, and Green had four points, nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 24 minutes. 

Sophomore Nei'Shae Clegg came off the bench to finish with seven points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes. Sophomore Valery Velazquez had five points and four rebounds in 36 minutes. 

Valley Prep Recap 

After a slow start, SMCC closed to within 40-35 at halftime. However, Valley Prep won the second half 48-33 to post the 88-68 victory. The Cougars shot 43.9 percent from the floor and finished with 57 rebounds, 14 assists, six steals, and two blocks. 

Green went 6 of 12 from the field and made 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. Six of her 17 rebounds were offensive boards, and she added a block in 27 minutes. 

Dixon shot 7 of 11 from the floor and added four rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block in 32 minutes. Aguirre posted 15 points, a team-high eight assists, four rebounds, and four steals in 34 minutes. 

Clegg was the fourth Cougar to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points. She added six rebounds in 32 minutes. Sophomore DeeDee Medlock came off the bench to post four points, eight rebounds, and five assists in 23 minutes. Jok grabbed 10 rebounds in a reserve role and added four points.
