The South Mountain Community College women's golf team had two student-athletes qualify for the 2021 NJCAA Championships and displayed consistent improvement throughout the 2021 campaign, setting the stage for excellence in the upcoming years. Led by second-year head coach Chelsea Carroll, sophomore Miriam Verdugo and freshman Jenna Lee earned All-ACCAC honors and competed in the National Championships in Florida. Additionally, freshmen Emma Fisher and Gracie Henderson and sophomore Victoria Negrete represented SMCC admirably on the links.

Sophomore Miriam Verdugo and freshman Jenna Lee performed well at the 2021 NJCAA National Championships at Plantation Bay Beach and Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., on May 10-12. Verdugo finished at 103-over, 319 while Lee posted a 108-over, 324 in three rounds at the tournament, accomplished a host of goals and generated momentum for the Cougars for the future.

Sophomore Miriam Verdugo and freshman Jenna Lee open play at the 2021 NJCAA National Championship at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., on Monday, May 10. The tandem will play four rounds at the event, and they and SMCC head coach Chelsea Carroll are excited to learn and work under the pressures of championship golf.

South Mountain Community College women's golf sophomore Miriam Verdugo and freshman Jenna Lee earned Second Team All-ACCAC honors for their play in the spring 2021 season. The pair will compete at the 2021 NJCAA Women's Championships May 10-13 at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla. The two led the Cougars at the Paradise Valley Invitational at Wildfire Golf Club April 26-27, with Verdugo finishing 10th and Lee tying for 12th.

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team posted a 46-shot improvement in its second round of the Coyote Lady Classic April 17-18 at Las Colinas Golf Course. Sophomore Miriam Verdugo finished a team-best 11th, and Emma Fisher (15 strokes) and Jenna Lee (five strokes) moved up the leaderboard after shaving multiple strokes off their first-round score. As a team, the Cougars posted a season-best 377 in the second round and finished third at 232-over, 800.

Sophomore Miriam Verdugo finished eighth at the Estrella Mountain Women's Invitational to lead the South Mountain Community College women's golf program to a third-place finish. Freshman Emma Fisher gave the Cougars top Top-10 finishers after she carded rounds of 97 and 98 to place 10th on Apr. 2-3 at Sundance Golf Course in Avondale, Ariz.

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team finished third at the Pima CC Women's Invitational at Randolph North Golf Course in Tucson on Mar. 29-30. Sophomore Miriam Verdugo led the Cougars at the event, placing 12th with a 52-over, 198, and freshman Emma Fisher and Jenna Lee posted significant improvements in the second round of the event.

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team placed third at ACCAC Spring Fling Invitational at Apache Creek Golf Club on Mar. 11-12 in Apache Junction, Ariz. Sophomore Miriam Verdugo led the Cougars with a 12th-place finish, improving by two strokes in her second round.

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team hosted the SMCC Women's Invitational at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen Village, Ariz., on Feb. 27-28. Facing competition from several conference rivals and visiting North Central Missouri College, the Cougars put together some impressive rounds at their home course.

Freshman Jenna Lee finished ninth at the season-opening Mesa CC Invitational Feb. 15-16 at Dobson Ranch Golf Course. The rookie from Peoria, Ariz., set the pace for the Cougars with a two-day score of 191. Lee opened the tournament with a 95 and then shot a 96 on the second day.

The world first met Tiger Woods as a two-year-old brandishing a putter with his dad and Bob Hope on the Mike Douglas Show. From that first glimpse, the world knew it was witnessing a golf prodigy and someone who would forever alter the game’s landscape. For South Mountain Community College sophomore Miriam Verdugo, the sport’s call didn’t come until later in her life. Just don’t assume her passion isn’t as fierce Woods or any other competitor.

The South Mountain Community College women’s golf team has started its 2020 spring season under the direction of new head coach Chelsea Carroll. A former assistant coach at Rogers State University and an assistant teaching professional at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Carroll hopes to establish Cougar women’s golf as a destination for student-athletes looking to compete and aspire to NCAA Division I and II programs.
