Women’s Golf Takes Second at Scottsdale Women’s Invitational

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team posted a third-place finish at the Scottsdale Women's Invite at Hillcrest Golf Course in Sun City on Mar. 2-3. Miriam Verdugo led the Cougars with a ninth-place finish, moving up three spots on the leaderboard after improving by eight strokes in her second round.

Sitting in fifth place after a tough first day, the Cougars posted a 21-shot improvement to leap past Paradise Valley Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College. As a foursome, SMCC shot a 119-over 835 for the two days.

Verdugo shot a 92 on the second day of the event, recording a birdie on the par-four second hole. She also carded four pars over her final 18 holes.

Tate Isaacson and Cassidy Martinez tied for 11th at the tournament. Isaacson posted a four-shot improvement on the second day, carding a birdie on the first hole and adding three pars in the final round. Martinez also birdied the first hole and had two pars in the round.

Victoria Negrete improved by seven shots in her second round and finished 22nd overall. She moved up one spot on the leaderboard over her final 18 holes, recording a pair of bogeys.
