The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (4-5) split home doubleheaders on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26, picking up victories over Central Arizona and Williston State College and falling to Southeastern CC and Mesa CC. Sophomore Rylee Pitts led SMCC with 10 kills in the non-conference win over the Vaqueras and added 10 more in the win over the Tetons.
Southeastern CC Recap
The Cougars fell in four sets to the visiting Blackhawks from Iowa: 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16.
SMCC hit .201 in the match and finished with 39 kills, 27 assists, seven service aces, 62 digs and 13 blocks.
Pitts hit .226 in 31 attacks and added five digs and a block assist. Freshman Rylea Simonich and sophomore Mariah Smith added eight kills in the win. Simonich added a service ace, a dig, two solo blocks and three block assists, while Smith had a dig and a block assist.
Sophomore Lexi Wasil finished with five kills, a solo block, and two block assists, and freshman Lesjune Florance-Littles had three kills, nine digs and a service ace.
Sophomore Delicea McAuley had a team-high 21 assists and added a kill, a service ace and nine digs, while freshman Hope Williamson posted 11 digs, five assists, four service aces, and a kill.
Sophomore Shayna Simmers led SMCC with 14 digs, while freshman Mikelle McAfee recorded 12 digs and an assist.
Central Arizona Recap
The Cougars swept their ACCAC rival Vaqueras in their second match on Aug. 25: 25-17, 25-13, and 25-16.
SMCC hit .333 with 33 kills in 75 swings and added 32 assists, five service aces, 29 digs, and 14 blocks.
Pitts finished with 10 kills and hit .375 in 24 attacks. Simonich was second on the squad with seven kills and added two solo blocks and three block assists. Florance-Littles had six kills in 15 attacks and added a service ace and a dig.
Williamson had a team-high 18 assists and added three digs, one solo stuff and two block assists. McAuley had 11 assists and three digs, and freshman Helen Altagaracia finished with two kills, a service ace, and six digs.
McAfee led SMCC with 11 digs and added a service ace and an assist, and sophomore Brynley Lynch had two kills and a block assist.
Williston State College Recap
The Cougars posted their second sweep in as many days with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Tetons from North Dakota: 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.
Pitts posted a team-high 10 kills for the third-straight match and added 13 digs for her second double-double. She also had three service aces.
Simonich hit .333 on 18 swings and posted six kills, three service aces, three solo blocks, one dig and one block assist. Lynch was third on the squad with four kills and recorded one service ace, one dig and one solo block.
McAuley led SMCC with 18 assists and added nine digs and a kill, and Williamson finished with 11 assists, three service aces and three digs.
McAfee finished with 16 digs, two service aces and an assist, and Simmers added five digs.
Mesa CC Recap
In a thrilling five-set match to wrap up the weekend, the Thunderbirds edged the Cougars in a non-conference contest: 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12.
The Cougars finished with 59 kills and hit .117 in 180 attacks over the five sets. SMCC also had 57 assists, nine service aces, 85 digs, and 15 blocks.
Pitts posted her second-straight double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Simonich hit .355 on 31 swings with 11 kills and zero errors. She also had two digs, two solo blocks and a block assist.
Wasil had 12 kills on 42 attacks and added five digs and a service ace. Freshman Ayanna Rae LeBlanc had a season-high eight kills and added four solo blocks and two block assists. Florance-Littles finished with five kills, six digs, and a service ace.
McAuley led SMCC with 30 assists and added a kill and six digs, and Williamson finished with 26 assists, two kills, two service aces, two digs, a solo block and two block assists.
McAfee posted a season-high 28 digs to go with an assist, and Simmers posted nine digs. Sophomore Hayden Rosales posted three kills, two digs and a block assist.
