Bio

Sophie Baca has been an instrumental figure at South Mountain Community College since 2000 and currently serves as the athletic department’s office and compliance coordinator. She is responsible for NJCAA Eligibility Compliance, assisting athletic department, fitness center, and athletic training departments with any needs to run their programs efficiently.  She is responsible for all purchasing, assisting with travel, and budgets, and for Department of Education Equity in Athletics report. 

Baca started with the Maricopa County Community College District in July 1995 after graduating from the Maricopa Skill Center with an Advanced Accounting Certificate. From 1995-2000, Baca worked at the Maricopa Skill Center, first in career services and then the financial aid department. 

She then moved to SMCC and became a financial aid technician from 2001-05. Baca has since served in her current role in the athletic department since 2005 and also served as an administrative assistant to Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Felicia Ganther.

It is her passion to assist student-athletes with their educational and sport goals, and she is a graduate of South Mountain Community College herself. She is married, a mother and loves hiking, reading and yoga. She works in the athletic department because she gets to work with great co-workers whose strengths she admires and respects, and the opposite of hers. She known as the “School Mom” and loves her job.
