Patrick Mooney Named SMCC Men's Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Head Coach

Longtime South Mountain Community College volleyball coach Patrick Mooney has been named the head coach of the SMCC men's volleyball and beach volleyball programs, SMCC Athletic Director Todd Eastin announced. The former head coach of the SMCC women's indoor program for 13 years, Mooney also serves as an assistant coach for that program and works as the athletic department's academic advisor.

Thirty-seven South Mountain Community College student-athletes received 2021 NJCAA All-Academic Team honors for their performance in the classroom during the 2020-21 academic year. Additionally, four SMCC programs received 2021 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year awards for their team GPA and the four programs tied for the lead or outright led all schools in the NJCAA Region I.

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball and beach volleyball programs have a host of four-year transfers and graduates ready to take on a new stage in their life. Head coach Melissa Hess and the Cougars have six 2021 graduates (Quinci Dalley, Alyssa McDowell, Marlayna Stapleton, Mikaila Williams, Mackenzie Cumbie, Madison Wampler), and three student-athletes will be continuing their volleyball career at four-year institutions: Stapleton, Cumbie and Wampler.

The South Mountain Community College women's beach volleyball team celebrated the Cougars' inaugural season on the sand with five matches, including a 4-0 victory over Trinidad State Junior College on April 30 for the program's first dual victory. Head coach Melissa Hess and the Cougars also squared off with Mesa CC in four duals and set the stage for more exciting beach volleyball action in the years to come.

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball team fell 3-1 to Mesa Community College in the Cougars' season finale on Friday, May 14 at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. Mikaila Williams and Alyssa McDowell won their duel on the second court, winning in three sets (18-21, 23-21, 15-8) to finish the year with a 3-2 overall record as a tandem.

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball team lost 3-2 to Mesa Community College in a duel at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday, May 7. Sophomore Marlayna Stapleton and freshman Mckenna Androsky improved to 4-0 on the season as a tandem, winning their second-court contest in straight sets.

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball defeated Trinidad State Junior College 4-0 in a duel on Friday, April 30, at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. The Cougars won in straight sets on the third court and then captured the other three courts in three sets to post their first victory as a program. In more action from April 30, the Cougars and Mesa Community College played to a 2-2 draw in the second meeting of the spring.

The South Mountain Community College women's beach volleyball team (0-1) competed in its first duel ever, facing Mesa Community College at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, April 16. Although the Cougars ultimately fell 3-1 to the Thunderbirds, sophomore Marlayna Stapleton and freshman McKenna Androksy won in straight sets in their match on the No. 1 court to give the pair the first match victory in school history.

The South Mountain Community College athletic department has added beach volleyball as an NJCAA Division II sport, Athletic Director Todd Eastin announced. Led by women's indoor volleyball head coach Melissa Hess, the Cougars will take on Mesa CC in four matches at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz., in April and May 2021.
