Cougar Beach Volleyball Defeats Trinidad State JC for Program's First Duel Win

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball defeated Trinidad State Junior College 4-0 in a duel on Friday, April 30, at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. The Cougars won in straight sets on the third court and then captured the other three courts in three sets to post their first victory as a program. In more action from April 30, the Cougars and Mesa Community College played to a 2-2 draw in the second meeting of the spring.
Against the Trojans, the No. 1 pairing of Mikaila Williams and Alyssa McDowell won in three sets for their first win of the spring. They took the top match 21-13, 19-21 and 15-13. On the second court, the pairing of Marlayna Stapleton and Mckenna Androsky won for the second time this spring with a three-set victory: 21-6, 19-21 and 15-13.
The third court saw Mackenzie Cumbie and Claire Burford win in straight sets (21-9, 21-17) for their first win of the spring. Finally, Lizzie Hall and Gracie Henderson won on court four with a 19-21, 21-11, 15-7 comeback victory to lift the Cougars to the sweep.
Facing Mesa CC for the second time in two weeks, the Cougars won on courts one and two to split the four matches. Williams and McDowell won for the second time on the day, claiming the No. 1 court with a 21-19, 20-22 and 15-10 victory. Stapleton and Androsky improved to 3-0 with a 23-21, 19-21 and 15-10 win on the second court.
In the third match-up, Burford and Cumbie fell 21-8 and 21-14, while Henderson and Madison Davis lost in straight sets (21-12, 21-12) on the fourth court.
The Cougars will return to action on Friday, May 7, with a noon match-up against Mesa CC at Kiwanis Park.
