SMCC Beach Volleyball Opens 2022 Campaign

The South Mountain Community College women's beach volleyball team (0-1) opened its 2022 season on Feb. 2 against Park University-Gilbert at Gilbert Regional Park. Sophomore Sienna Cumbie and freshman Emily Wilson posted a straight-set victory (21-14, 21-19) in their No. 3 match against the Buccaneers, but Park won the match 5-1.
"Sienna and Emily won by playing some gritty defense and through some solid teamwork," said SMCC head coach Patrick Mooney. 
Sophomores Nikole Lunsford and Mckenna Androsky nearly won on the second court, falling 23-21 and 21-19. Because the team has 11 student-athletes, freshman Leilani Clark played the No.5 and No. 6 contests for SMCC. The No. 6 court was considered an exhibition.
The Cougars will play their future home matches at Churaposa Park in Chandler, Ariz. Their next home match is on Thursday, Feb. 17, against Park University-Gilbert.
