SMCC Baseball Falls Twice at Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (26-11, 20-10 ACCAC) lost 7-6 and 6-3 to Arizona Western in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader in Yuma, Ariz., on April 17. In the first game, the teams traded leads and needed extra innings before the Matadors pushed across an unearned run in the eighth to record the victory. In the second game, SMCC could not hold on to a 3-1 lead in the fourth and fell in both ends of a doubleheader for only the second time this season. 

Game One

McKay Barney and Brodie Marino hit home runs, but an Arizona Western run in the sixth forced extra innings where the Matadors eventually prevailed. 

Barney went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs, a walk and his second home run of the season. Marino hit a solo home run, his fourth of the year, and also drew a walk. 

Five other Cougars had hits in the loss: Dustin BermudezBraden CampbellHolden BreezeJustin Quinn and Brice Martinez. Bermudez picked up an RBI, while Campbell, Breeze and Martinez each scored a run. 

Shawn Triplett (3-1) took the loss for SMCC, recording a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Five other Cougars saw time on the hill during the game: Ronan KoppTJ CzyzNolan LivseyRyan Figueroa and Trent Adams

Game Two

The Cougars led 2-0 after two innings and 3-1 after their half of the fourth, but a three-run fourth and two-run sixth propelled Arizona Western to the win. 

Martinez led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 performance and recorded a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Clayton Kempski hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, and Justin Quinn, Breeze and Bermudez recorded doubles. 

Derek Decolati (2-1) took the loss for SMCC, throwing 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Ben Meyerson and Drew Woody also saw time on the mound for the Cougars in the game. 

SMCC returns to action on Tuesday, April 20, with a home ACCAC doubleheader against Central Arizona. The first game starts at noon.
