SMCC Baseball Announces Four-Year Transfers

The South Mountain Community College baseball team announced a host of four-year transfers from the 2021 squad that finished 32-16 in its return to the diamond after the coronavirus pandemic. Although these student-athletes are headed to new schools to continue their careers, they will be Cougars forever: Brice Martinez (Wofford University), McKay Barney (University of Washington), Brodie Marino (Oregon Institute of Technology), Trent Adams (Campbell University), Shawn Triplett (Grand Canyon University), Matt Bohnert (Lipscomb University), Mason Skaugrud (Oregon Institute of Technology), Dustin Bermudez (Ouachita Baptist University), Justin Quinn (Oral Roberts University), Andrew Lucas (Arizona State University) and Derek Decolati (University of Nevada, Reno). 

Triplett will make the short trip to Grand Canyon University, where the Antelopes finished 39-21-1 and participated in their first NCAA Division I Tournament in 2021. He earned First Team All-ACCAC and First Team Region I Division I honors for his work as the Cougars' closer. Triplett led the conference with 11 saves and went 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work. He recorded two saves against Yavapai College, Paradise Valley CC and Eastern Arizona and closed out wins over Phoenix College, Eastern Arizona, Glendale CC, Scottsdale CC and Arizona Western.

In the covid-shortened 2020 season, Triplett had a 2.19 ERA and was 2-1 with a save in 12.1 innings of work. He also pitched three innings for SMCC during the 2019 campaign.

Quinn, a 6-1 outfielder, is headed to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles went 31-23 overall and 19-7 in The Summitt League in the 2021 season, and former SMCC assistant coach Jimmy Turk serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the squad. 

Quinn earned 2021 First Team All-ACCAC and Second Team All-Region I, Division I honors after he batted .339 with 36 runs, 13 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 36 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. In addition, he led the team in doubles and triples and tied for the team lead in home runs and RBIs and hit for the cycle, and posted a season-high four hits in a postseason win over Cochise College. In 2020, he hit .267 with 24 runs, four doubles, one triple, one home run, a team-high 24 RBIs and two stolen bases, while in 2019, he batted .298 with 23 runs, eight doubles, four triples, three home runs, 32 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

Martinez will attend Wofford University, an NCAA Division I member of the Southern Conference in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers finished 36-21 overall in 2021 and posted a 21-9 mark in league play. 

Martinez received a Second Team All-ACCAC award after leading the team with a .339 batting average, 39 runs and 19 stolen bases. He hit a game-winning, walk-off home run and had a season-high three RBIs in a 10-9 win over Pima CC in the 2021 home finale and scored a season-high three runs three times. In addition, he had a season-high four hits in a win over GateWay CC and produced a season-high three stolen bases in a win over Arizona Western.

Barney will continue his baseball career at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2021, Barney patrolled centerfield for most of the year and finished with a .325 batting average, 34 runs, six doubles, four triples, two home runs and 18 stolen bases. In addition, he scored a season-high two runs eight times, had a season-high three hits in a win over Mesa CC, drove in a season-high four RBIs in a win at Yavapai College, and stole a season-high three stolen bases in a win over Gateway CC.

Marino and Skaugrud will move on to the Oregon Institute of Technology, an NAIA school in Klamath Falls, OR. The Owls finished 18-14 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

Marino appeared in 31 games at catcher for the Cougars in 2021 and batted .227 with four doubles, four home runs and 19 RBIs. He had a season-high four RBIs in a win over Arizona Western and had a season-high two hits twice. He had four doubles in the abridged 2020 season and nine RBIs, and Marino added three doubles and nine RBIs in 2019.

Skaugrud, a 6-4 first baseman, batted .289 with three doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs in the 2021 season. He homered in victories over Phoenix College, Eastern Arizona and Mesa CC. In 2020, Skaugrud had a home run, five runs and two RBIs.

Adams will head to Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., an NCAA Division I institution that competes in the Big South Conference. The Camels participated in the 2021 NCAA Tournament at the Starkville Regional after finishing 37-18 overall and 28-9 in league action.

He led the Cougars with seven wins and finished 7-0 in 23 innings and 18 appearances. He had 28 strikeouts and finished with a 3.91 ERA. He recorded two wins over Glendale CC and earned the win in victories against Gateway CC, Yavapai College, Phoenix College, Arizona Western and Mesa CC. He had a season-high five strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief work in a win against the Gauchos.

Bohnert, a 5-7 left-handed pitcher from Cave Creek, Ariz., is headed to NCAA Division I Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. The Bisons compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

In 2021, Bohnert went 2-4 with a 6.16 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 30.2 innings and 11 appearances. He picked up wins against Cochise College and Scottsdale CC and fanned a season-high 12 batters in five innings of work against Central Arizona.

Decolati, a 5-10 right-handed pitcher, is headed to the University of Nevada in Reno, an NCAA Division I institution. The Wolfpack finished 25-20 overall, 22-9 in the Mountain West Conference and participated in the 2021 NCAA Tournament at the Stanford Regional.

In 2021, Decolati started seven games and made 10 appearances in 2021, finishing 2-2 with a 4.58 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. He recorded wins over Pima CC and Eastern Arizona, in which he recorded a season-high five strikeouts. He appeared in nine games in 2020, posting a 3.38 ERA with six strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work. In 2019, he appeared in 13 games and finished 2-0 with a save, 23 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA in 28.1 innings of work. 

A 5-11 sophomore outfielder, Lucas will play next season at Arizona State University. The Sun Devils finished 33-22 overall, 16-14 in the Pac-12 Conference and participated in the 2021 NCAA Tournament at the Austin Regional. 

Lucas appeared in 38 games and batted .284 with six home runs, four triples, three doubles, 26 runs and 32 RBIs for SMCC in 2021, and posted eight games with multiple RBIs. He homered against Pima CC twice, Paradise Valley CC, Chandler-Gilbert CC, Cochise College and Eastern Arizona. He also saw time on the mound and appeared in five games with a pair of saves and a 4.50 ERA in 8.0 innings of work. 

Bermudez, a 5-11 infielder and right-handed pitcher from Chandler, Ariz., is headed to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Tigers compete in NCAA Division II in The Great America Conference. 

In 2021, Bermudez appeared in 41 games for SMCC in 2021 and batted .248 for the year. He produced nine doubles, 17 runs, a triple, two home runs and 29 RBIs, and scored a season-high two runs twice. He added a pair of doubles in a road win at Yavapai College, had a season-high four RBIs and three hits in a win over Scottsdale CC and homered in a win at Cochise College and at Mesa CC. As a pitcher in 2021, Bermudez made three starts and appeared in four games on the mound. He finished 1-0 with a 5.02 ERA and nine K's in 14.1 innings of work, earning a win at Glendale CC. 

In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Bermudez batted .333 with 17 runs, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBIs and three stolen bases. As a pitcher, he finished 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 28 innings of work.
