Cougar Baseball Splits Midweek Series with Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (20-22, 10-16 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference midweek series with Scottsdale CC, defeating the Artichokes 11-6 on April 5 before falling 7-5 on April 6. Jayden SmithCarter Richey and Kyle Alexander blasted home runs in the 11-6 victory, and Paul Sachen added a two-run shot in the 7-5 defeat. 

Game One Recap

SMCC trailed 3-0 after two innings but scored four in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth en route to the 11-6 victory.

Four Cougars recorded two hits in the win: Gustavo SosaConnor Schneider, Sachen and Richey. Sosa scored three times, stole two bases and recorded a double, and Sachen added a triple, stole two bases and scored twice. Schneider scored once and had a steal, and Richey hit a two-run home run and added a sac fly.  

Smith hit a three-run home run, drew a walk and scored twice, and Alexander smashed a two-run shot for SMCC. 

Matthew Martinez (1-4) earned his first win of the season with three innings of relief work. He allowed one hit and struck out seven of the 12 batters he faced. 

Raul Garayzar started the game for SMCC and tossed four innings with four K's and one earned run. Gillis Champagne threw the final two frames and had three strikeouts and two hits.  

Game Two Recap

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind Sachen's two-run home run in the third, but the Artichokes scored seven runs in the fourth and held off an SMCC rally to post a 7-5 victory.  

Richey led the team with three hits, and he scored once and stole a base. Three Cougars (Sachen, Drew Bond and Esteban Hernandez) had two hits in the loss. Bond roped a double, stole a base and scored twice, while Hernandez scored a run. 

Sachen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and his second home run, and Brian Leon and Kyle Alexander added an RBI. 

Carter Krosky (2-3) took the loss with 3.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs with three strikeouts. Charlie Deeds tossed 4.1 innings of relief work and surrendered one hit with two K's. Jacob Beltran struck out the side in the ninth.
