SMCC Baseball Splits ACCAC Doubleheader at Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (25-27, 13-21 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Yavapai College on April 23. The Cougars won the first game 11-6 behind 11 hits as Gustavo Sosa hit a home run and Brian Leon and Taylor Tractenberg added doubles. SMCC jumped out to an early in game two, but the Roughriders rallied in the later frames to split the doubleheader. 

Game One Recap 

SMCC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and 6-0 after their half of the fifth. The Roughriders scored three times in the fifth and plated a run in the seventh before the Cougars slammed the door on the rally to win 6-4. 

Ryan Figueroa (6-2) recorded his sixth win of the season on the mound with four innings of work. He had five strikeouts with two earned runs. 

Matthew Martinez tossed 2.2 innings of relief and had six strikeouts, and Jacob Beltran recorded the final out of the game to post his second save. 

Sosa hit a solo home run and added a sac fly, and Connor Schneider finished with two hits and a run. Tractenberg had an RBI double and a run. 

Six Cougars finished with a base hit, including Leon's double, Carter Richey added an RBI, and Jayden Smith scored a run. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings and added two more in the fourth, but the Roughriders struck for four in the fifth to take a 6-5 advantage. Yavapai added three runs over the sixth and seventh to post the 9-6 win. 

Connor SchneiderQuade Swearingen and Tractenberg had two hits apiece. Schneider scored a pair of runs and hit a double, while Swearingen also doubled. 

Sosa hit his second home run of the day, a two-run shot, and Tractenberg also went deep and had a pair of RBIs. Richey and Leon had a hit and scored a run. 

Drew Bond took the loss on the mound for SMCC. He tossed 4.2 innings with six strikeouts and two earned runs. Charlie DeedsAlec Stanfield and Gillis Champagne saw time in relief.
