Five Cougars Set to Transfer for 2023 Season

The South Mountain Community College baseball team announced that five pitchers from its 2022 roster will transfer to four-year universities to continue their intercollegiate baseball careers for the upcoming 2023 season. Carter Krosky (Utah Valley University), Drew Woody (Utah Valley University), Alec Stanfield (University of New Mexico), Ryan Figueroa (CSU Bakersfield) and Charlie Deeds (Southeastern Oklahoma State University) represented SMCC over the past several seasons with spirit and honor, and further the Cougars' reputation of developing talent for the next level. 

Utah Valley University is in Orem, Utah, and the Wolverines compete in the Western Athletic Conference.

Krosky is a 6-6 right-handed pitcher from Phoenix and Sunrise Mountain High School. He appeared in 33 games during his Cougar career and finished 10-8 with a save and a 4.34 ERA in 128.2 innings. He also recorded 110 strikeouts and 29 walks in his career.

In 2022, Krosky appeared in 14 games and made 11 starts on the mound. He finished 4-4 with a 5.55 ERA in 61.2 innings and had 59 strikeouts and 13 walks. He recorded victories over Yavapai College, Paradise Valley CC, Phoenix College and Central Arizona and had a season-high eight strikeouts against Arizona Western.

In 2021, he was 6-4 with a 3.54 ERA in 56 innings and posted 43 K's and 12 walks. During the year, he defeated Eastern Arizona, Glendale CC, Paradise Valley CC, Scottsdale CC, Cochise College, and Yavapai College, including a complete-game shutout against the Gila Monsters. In the covid-shortened 2020 season, Krosky pitched in seven games and posted a save and a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings.

Woody is a 6-0 left-handed pitcher from Gilbert, Ariz., and Highland High School. He appeared in 20 games and made four starts as a Cougars, finishing 3-2 with a 6.84 ERA in 26.1 innings. He had 33 career strikeouts to 19 walks.

He appeared in nine games, made one start for SMCC in 2022 and finished 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA and 11 K's in nine innings. He tossed an inning of relief to earn a victory over Chandler-Gilbert CC and made a start at Glendale CC, where he fanned five in three frames.

Woody went 2-1 in three starts and 11 games in 2021, finishing with 22 strikeouts and a 5.71 ERA in 17.1 innings. He defeated Eastern Arizona and Pima CC and had a season-high five strikeouts in a separate contest against the Gila Monsters.

Stanfield is a 6-2 right-handed pitcher from Albuquerque and will pitch for the hometown Lobos. The University of New Mexico competes in the Mountain West Conference.

He went 2-4 with a save in 27 games and six starts for the Cougars. He pitched in 14 games, made one start in 2022, and finished 0-2 with a save and a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings. He recorded 33 strikeouts and nine walks and picked up a save at Phoenix College with a two-strikeout inning. Stanfield had a season-high five strikeouts in 3.1 innings against Yavapai College and posted four games with four strikeouts.

In 2021, Stanfield appeared in 13 games and made five starts. He finished 2-2 with 31 K's and a 7.80 ERA in 30 innings and recorded wins over Eastern Arizona and Central Arizona. He posted a season-high six strikeouts in a contest against Cochise College.

Figueroa, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher from Chandler, Ariz., will continue his intercollegiate career at CSU Bakersfield, an NCAA Division I institution in the Big West Conference. 

In 2022, Figueroa finished 7-2 with a 4.09 ERA in 66 innings and had 75 strikeouts to 17 walks for SMCC. Figueroa defeated Glendale CC twice, Eastern Arizona, Yavapai College and Cochise College during the ACCAC season. He had a season-high 10 K's in 7.1 innings of relief against the Gila Monsters. 

In 2021, Figueroa went 3-0 with one save and a 1.84 ERA in 14.2 innings of work for the Cougars. He picked up a pair of wins against Cochise College and defeated Pima CC. He earned a save against Scottsdale CC and had a season-high five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief against Mesa CC. 

Deeds, a 6-0 right-handed pitcher from Larkspur, Colo., is headed to Southeastern Oklahoma State, an NCAA Division II institution in Durant, Okla. The Savage Storm compete in the Great American Conference.

He appeared in 19 games in his SMCC career, making one start and finishing 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in 27.1 innings. He had 23 career strikeouts and 16 walks and went 1-1 in 16 games with 22 K's and 11 walks in 24.2 innings in 2022.

He picked up a win with 3.2 innings of relief at Eastern Arizona and had a season-high seven strikeouts in three innings against Chandler-Gilbert CC. Deeds pitched in three games in 2021, making one start for the Cougars.
