Gustavo Sosa Selected by Philadelphia Phillies in 2022 MLB Draft

PHOENIX ---

The Philadelphia Phillies drafted South Mountain Community College baseball catcher Gustavo Sosa in the 10th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft with pick 302. A redshirt-freshman from Staten Island, N.Y., Sosa earned Second Team All-ACCAC honors in 2022 after batting .337 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBIs, 24 walks and seven stolen bases.

Sosa also posted a .415 on-base and .561 slugging percentage for the Cougars. He recorded 18 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games during the year and finished with a season-high four hits and four RBIs in a win at Gateway CC on Mar. 30.

Sosa spent the 2021 season at Rutgers, an NCAA Division I institution and member of the Big Ten Conference in Piscataway, N.J. After graduating from Tottenville High School, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted Sosa in the 19th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, but he did not sign.

Sosa is the sixth Cougar to be selected by the Phillies since 2002 and the first since Trey Ford in 2011. Other former SMCC baseball standouts drafted by the Phillies include Kyle Ottoson (2010), Chase Johnson (2009), Lucas Miranda (2008) and Chris Honsa (2002).

His selection marks two-straight seasons that an SMCC has had a player drafted directly from the team. In 2021, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Ronan Kopp with pick 372 in the 12th round. Kopp, a 6-7 left-handed pitcher from Scottsdale, made six starts and appeared in 10 games in 2021, posting a save, 38 strikeouts and a 2.84 ERA in 25.1 innings of work.
