The South Mountain Community College baseball team (41-15, 33-7 ACCAC) defeated Phoenix College 11-3 (7 innings) in an ACCAC home game on Saturday, April 26. Sophomore Maxton Peck hit a three-run home run, sophomore Raul Parada had two hits and two RBIs, and freshman Nuri Todd went 2 for 2 with two runs, an RBi, and a double as the Cougars successfully wrapped up the regular season with a victory on Sophomore Day. The day before, SMCC fell 12-0 (5 innings) at Pima CC in the Cougars' final ACCAC road game.
The Cougars scored a run in all but one inning in the victory over the Bears. Freshman Bobby Pierce Jr. scored on an RBI groundout from Parada in the first, and Pierce Jr. laced a two-run, two-out single that scored Todd and sophomore Marcus Romero in the second to put SMCC ahead 3-0.
Todd hit a two-out RBI double to score Romero in the third, and Parada and Terranova picked up RBIs in the fourth.
Peck ripped a pinch-hit, three-run home run in the fifth that brought in Romero and Todd, and sophomore Landon Springmeyer scored earlier in the inning on a wild pitch. The game ended in the seventh when freshman Jaden Leon scored on a wild pitch.
Parada was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, a triple, and a run, while Pierce Jr. was 1 for 2 with a run, a walk, a stolen base, and two RBIs. Romero walked and scored three times and added two stolen bases in the win.
Freshman Sam Yeager earned the win by getting two outs in relief. Sophomore Michael Caruso started the game for SMCC and went 3.2 innings with four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Freshman Braeden McCarroll tossed 2.2 innings of relief with seven strikeouts, two hits, two unearned runs, and a walk.
At Pima CC on April 25, the host Aztecs scored four in the second and added eight in the fourth to post a win in their regular season home finale. Parada, Terranova, and sophomore Luke Jones had singles in the loss.
Sophomore Luis Martin Romero took the loss on the mound with four innings of work. He allowed four hits, one earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Freshman Grant Young tossed an inning of relief.
