Cougar Men's Hoops Downs GCU Club Team 83-69

Sophomore Elijah Melendez scored a season-high 22 points and sophomore Demonte Demore finished with a double-double (16 points and 12 rebounds) as the South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (4-3) defeated the Grand Canyon University Club Team 83-69 on Nov. 13 at Cougar Gym. 

The Cougars jumped out to a 43-30 lead at halftime and posted a 40-39 victory in the second half. SMCC shot 51.5 percent (34-of-66) from the field and 45 percent from the 3-point line (9-of-20), and added 48 rebounds, 20 assists, 10 steals and three blocked shots. 

Melendez finished 9-of-14 from the field and 4-of-8 from downtown in 30 minutes of work. He is now averaging 13.3 points per game for the season. 

Demore was 7-of-11 from the field and had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals in 26 minutes. Fellow sophomore Jalen Gant was the second Cougar with double-figure rebounds, grabbing 11 boards to go with six points in 23 minutes. 

Freshman Darien Allen posted eight points, six rebounds, a team-high five assists and three steals while sophomore Shawn Black came off the bench to finish with nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore Davion Stringer added five points, eight rebounds and four assists in the victory.
