SMCC Men's Hoops Opens Season with 96-60 Victory

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Bella Vista National Prep 96-60 in its 2022-23 season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the SMCC Gym. All five Cougar starters scored in double-figures in the victory, led by freshman Jimmy Causey Jr.'s team-best 21 points and nine rebounds. 

SMCC shot 53.8 percent from the field (35-of-65) and 50 percent from 3-point range (10-of-20) over the 40 minutes. The Cougars grabbed 30 rebounds, dished out 24 assists, had 12 steals and posted five blocks in the win. 

Causey Jr. was 7-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from 3-point range. He added nine rebounds, two assists and two steals in 27 minutes. 

Freshman Jaylen Wesley was second on the team with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He also had two 3-pointers and recorded five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in 31 minutes. 

Sophomore Darien Allen scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 27 minutes, while fellow sophomore Khabri Davis was 6-of-8 from the field to post 14 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes.  

Sophomore Steven Cervantes was the fifth Cougar in double-figures, finishing with 13 points and a team-high three 3-pointers. He added a team-high four assists in 19 minutes. 

Sophomore Abdi Odowaay came off the bench to post five points, four assists and three rebounds in 15 minutes, and freshman Nahshon Harper had two points, four rebounds and four steals.
