SMCC Men's Basketball Falls at Yavapai College in Overtime

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 60-58 in overtime at Yavapai College in an ACCAC game on Jan. 14 at Walraven Gym in Prescott, Ariz. Sophomore Darien Allen led SMCC with 12 points, and freshman Jaylen Wesley added 11, but the Roughriders scored late baskets in regulation and overtime to secure the victory. 

SMCC led 52-51 with 33 seconds to play before the Roughriders tied the game on a free throw to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, SMCC held a one-point lead in the final minute before Yavapai scored the go-ahead basket and added an insurance free throw. 

Allen finished 5-of-16 from the field and added five rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes. Wesley was 4-of-12 from the field and had five rebounds, two steals and an assist in 22 minutes. 

Freshman Jimmy Causey Jr. had nine points and a team-best nine rebounds in 23 minutes, and sophomore Steven Cervantes posted seven points and two assists.

Freshman Nahshon Harper came off the bench to record seven points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists in 36 minutes. Sophomore Khabri Davis and freshman Shamar Grant scored five points apiece off the bench, with Davis grabbing five rebounds and Grant recording a pair of steals. 

SMCC shot 33.9 percent from the field and made 16-of-20 free throws. The Cougars recorded 33 rebounds, 14 assists and eight steals.
