Belisle, SMCC Men's Golf Win Scottsdale CC Invitational

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team fired a -12 (564) to win the Scottsdale CC Invitational Mar. 1-2 at Hillcrest Golf Club. Individually, freshman Cecil Belisle won the tournament by firing a -4 (140) over the two days, while Ryan Macpherson, Nick Hedman and Damon Vilkauskas all recorded top-five finishes.
A freshman from Red Wing, Minn., Belisle opened the tournament with a four-under, 68 to take a one-stroke lead over teammates Jando Hernandez and Hedman. In the second round, Belisle posted an even-par 72 and took individual medalist honors by two strokes.
The Cougars posted an -11 (277) on day one and a -1 (287) on day two, finishing at -12 (564) for the event.
Macpherson tied for second at the event, firing a two-under, 142 for the two days. He opened the event with a three-under 68 and then shot a one-over 73 in the second round.
Vilkauskas had a strong second round, firing a two-under 70 to move into a fifth-place tie at the event. He opened the event with a one-over 73. Hedman also tied for fifth, posting an opening round of one-under 71 and an even-par 72 in the second round.
Hernandez tied for eighth with an even-par, 144 for the two days. He opened with a three-under 69 and then carded a three-over 75 in the second round.
Ryan Vickers tied for 32nd at the event, finishing at 15-over 159. He improved by three shots on his second day, carding a six-over 78.
The men's golf team returns to action at the Glendale CC Men's Invitational at Corta Bella Golf Course in Sun City West, Ariz., on Mar. 15-16.
