No. 15 Cougar Softball Falls Twice at No. 1 Phoenix College

The No. 15 South Mountain Community College softball team (17-9, 17-7 ACCAC) lost 9-1 and 12-2 to No. 1 Phoenix College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. Freshman Mia Stankiewicz hit her team-leading 11th home run of the year in the first game and added an RBI in the second game, but the Bears prevailed in the match-up of nationally ranked foes.

Game One

Alexa Key and Stankiewicz had two hits apiece in the six-inning, 9-1 defeat, and Key recorded her 22nd stolen base of the year. That figure ranks second in the ACCAC, trailing teammate Destiny Apodaca by one. Jackie Traughber and Tara Lorona had the other two Cougar hits.

Traughber (11-4) tossed five innings for SMCC in defeat and had two strikeouts and four walks in the circle.

Game Two

Stankiewicz collected an RBI single to score Taylor Mount in the second, and Jaudrey Ah Quin also scored in the frame, but the Cougars fell 12-2 in five innings.

Traughber had the other Cougar base hit and fell to 11-5 in the circle with 3.2 innings and one strikeout. Christian Smith tossed 1.2 innings in relief for SMCC.

The Cougars will look to return to their winning ways with an ACCAC home doubleheader against Chandler-Gilbert CC on April 20. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
