No. 15 Cougars Sweep Doubleheader against Scottsdale CC

The No. 15 South Mountain Community College (23-9, 23-7 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale Community College 9-1 (5) and 12-1 (5) in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on April 27. In the first game, Mia Stankiewicz scored three runs and had two RBIs, Christian Smith had a key two-run double and Tara Lorona hit an RBI triple. In the second game, the Cougars smashed 14 singles, and Stankiewicz hit her second double of the day as SMCC swept the Fighting Artichokes. 

Game One

Six different Cougars scored a run in the 9-1, five-inning victory. SMCC struck for three runs in the first, one in the second and third, and four more in the fourth to post the run-rule victory. 

Stankiewicz was 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and a stolen base. Smith had a season-high three RBIs and her second double of the season, while Lorona tied Stankiewicz for the team lead with her fifth triple of the season. Taylor Mount scored a pair of runs, and she, Alexa Key, and Jackie Traughber recorded stolen bases. 

Traughber (14-5) tossed a complete game to earn her 14th win of the season. She allowed four hits, and one earned run to go with six strikeouts. 

Game Two

The Cougar offense continued to roll, producing multiple runs in three innings to lift them to a 12-1, five-inning victory in the second game. SMCC scored a pair of runs in the second, four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth to defeat the Fighting Artichokes. 

Jianna Martinez and Smith led the team with three hits in the win. Martinez finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Smith was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. 

Key went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases, while Stankiewicz finished 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and her second double of the day. Jaudrey Ah Quin finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, and Lorona and Mount added stolen bases. 

Smith (9-4) earned her ninth win of the season with a five-inning complete game. She had one strikeout and allowed three hits and one walk. 

The No. 15 Cougars host Gateway Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader on Saturday, May 1. The first game starts at noon.
