Cougars Defeat Coyotes to Open Region I Division II Tournament

The South Mountain Community College softball team (26-11) defeated Chandler-Gilbert Community College 5-1 in the first game of the Region I Division II tournament at Phoenix College on May 13. The Cougars used a two-out rally in the fourth, punctuated by a three-run home run from Mia Stankiewicz, to plate five runs, and Christian Smith tossed a complete game in the circle. SMCC won its postseason opener and advanced to the winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 14.

With two outs in the fourth, Jaudrey Ah Quin scored on an error by the CGCC shortstop. A passed ball allowed Tatumn Ellis to score, and Stankiewicz cleared the bases and brought home Alexa Key and Jackie Traughber with her 15th home run of the year to put SMCC ahead 5-0.

The Coyotes scored a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Smith was able to work herself out of multiple jams. She earned her 11th win of the season with the seven-inning performance.

SMCC will play Phoenix College at 1 p.m. on May 14. The winner of that game advances to the regional final on Saturday, May 15, while the loser has to immediately play an elimination game against the winner of Friday's first game (between Glendale CC and Chandler-Gilbert CC).
