Cougar All-American Kate Hogan Transfers to Idaho State University

South Mountain Community College softball infielder Kate Hogan will continue her intercollegiate softball career at NCAA Division I Idaho State University for the upcoming 2023 season. Originally from Tooele, Utah, Hogan earned First Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American honors after a stellar season for the Cougars and head coach Brittney Matta.

South Mountain Community College softball head coach Brittney Matta announced the program's four-year transfers after a stellar 2022 season that saw the Cougars advance to the Region Division II tournament for a second-consecutive season. Rylie Atherton (Concordia-Irvine), Jaudrey Ah Quin (Lake Forest College), Lauren Russell (Park-Gilbert), Tara Lorona (Park-Gilbert), Taylor Mount (Park-Gilbert), Christian Smith (Park-Gilbert), Carolina Olivas (Park-Gilbert), Mariah Martinez (Park-Gilbert) and Monica Chon (Park-Gilbert) represented SMCC with honor throughout their careers. The Cougars are proud to see them continue their intercollegiate softball careers at their respective institutions.

A total of 43 South Mountain Community College student-athletes earned 2021-22 NJCAA All-Academic honors for their work in the classroom. The SMCC women's golf team received NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors after posting a cumulative 3.65 team GPA, and the Cougars had 10 student-athletes earn First Team awards after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The South Mountain Community College men's golf, women's golf and softball programs have teamed up to host the 2022 Cougar Golf Classic Saturday, Aug. 13, at Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. The four-person scramble will have a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, and all proceeds will benefit the SMCC golf and softball programs.

Freshman Kate Hogan of the South Mountain Community College softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II First Team All-American honors for her play at second base during the 2022 season. She later received Second Team Division II All-American honors from the NJCAA.

The South Mountain Community College softball team had four student-athletes named to the Division II All-Region team as voted upon by the league's coaches. Sophomore Christian Smith, sophomore Tara Lorona, freshman Kate Hogan and freshman Mariah Martinez earned All-Region honors and Smith and Hogan also received Second Team All-ACCAC honors.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (34-22, 25-19 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 7-1 and 12-7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on May 7 in the regular-season finale for both squads. Freshman Kate Hogan led SMCC with three extra-base hits and three RBIs in the game one victory. Fellow freshman Mariah Martinez and sophomore Tara Lorona hit home runs in game two as the Cougars clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Division II Regional Tournament.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (32-22, 23-19 ACCAC) defeated Pima CC 14-10 and 9-1 (5 innings) on April 30 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader. The Cougars celebrated Sophomore Day with an offensive flourish as SMCC racked up 15 hits in game one, including a key two-run home run from Lauren Russell, while Kate Hogan hit a pair of home runs and Tara Lorona added one of her own in game two.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (30-20, 21-17 ACCAC) defeated Arizona Western 6-2 and 16-13 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on April 23. Freshman Mariah Martinez hit a pair of home runs and finished with three RBIs in the game one victory, and Annalise Chavez and Jaudrey Ah Quin went deep in the second game. SMCC swept its season series with Arizona Western College with the two wins.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (28-20, 19-17 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert CC on April 19. The Coyotes scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a 16-8, five-inning victory in the first game. In the second game, SMCC jumped out to a 5-0 after one inning and scored nine over the final two frames to post a 17-9, six-inning win.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (27-19, 18-16 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley CC 13-3 (5) and 11-7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on April 16. Taylor Mount and Kate Hogan led the Cougars with multi-hit performances in the first game, and SMCC smacked eight extra-base hits in the second contest to sweep the twinbill.

The South Mountain Community College softball (25-19, 16-16 ACCAC) lost 14-3 (5) and 16-4 (5) to Yavapai College in a road Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on April 12. Tara Lorona hit seventh home run of the season in the game one loss, while Monica Chon added a solo blast, her second of the season, in the second game.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (25-17, 16-14 ACCAC) lost twice in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Central Arizona on April 9. The Cougars lost the first game 11-3 as Lauren Russell had a pair of RBIs, and Kayliana Sablan added a double. In the second game, SMCC fell 12-11 as the Vaqueras rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (25-15, 16-12 ACCAC) split a home doubleheader with Glendale CC on April 5, winning game one 14-5 (6) before falling 6-5 in the second game. Kayliana Sablan, Tara Lorona and Annalise Chavez hit home runs for the Cougars in the 14-5 victory, and Lauren Russell and Lorona went deep in the 6-5 defeat.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (24-14, 15-11 ACCAC) lost 9-6 and 10-2 to Phoenix College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on April 2. Cougar freshman Mariah Martinez and Kayliana Sablan hit home runs in the 9-6 loss, Kate Hogan had a pair of hits, and Sablan scored a run and had an RBI in the 10-2 loss.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (24-12, 15-9 ACCAC) swept an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mesa CC on Mar. 26. The Cougars posted a 16-12 victory in the first game and an 18-14 decision in the second game to extend their winning streak to eight games. SMCC totaled 36 hits in the two games, including 15 for extra bases
