Former ASU All-American Maddi Hackbarth Named SMCC Softball Assistant Coach

Former Arizona State All-American Maddi Hackbarth has joined the South Mountain Community College softball program as an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season. A native of California, Hackbarth brings illustrious credentials and experience to her position with the Cougars and head coach Brittney Matta

"As a staff, we are thrilled to have Maddi join our South Mountain CC family," said Matta. "We continue to search for ways to motivate our student-athletes and strive for greatness. Maddi will help in a number of ways and I am excited to help her jumpstart her coaching career. The Sun Devil family remains strong here at South and I am forever grateful for ASU and the relationships I have formed over the years. Maddi will with our catches and call games. I also expect her to explore different parts of the game that will help develop her coaching skills and that she will handle multiple facets of the game." 

In 2021, Hackbarth earned Second Team NFCA and Third Team Softball America All-American honors after batting .384 with 20 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .913 slugging percentage. She also earned NFCA All-West Region and Pac-12 First Team honors and posted a .992 fielding percentage in 264 chances. She finished fifth in program history with 54 career home runs. 

The Oakdale, Calif., native graduated from ASU in 2020 with a degree in Liberal Studies.  She is the third former Sun Devil softball student-athlete to Matta's staff since 2020. Hackbarth attended Oakdale High School and played travel ball for Dennis Gomes and the Nor Cal Batbusters.
