Cougars Sweep PVCC in Home Doubleheader

The South Mountain Community College softball team (12-10, 5-7 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley CC 15-0 (5 innings) and 4-3 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on Mar. 1. The Cougars hit four home runs in the first game and scored 15 runs over the first three innings. In the second game, the Cougars rallied for a 4-3 victory by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Game One Recap

Freshman Annalise Chavez hit a pair of three-run home runs. Kate Hogan added another, and Tara Lorona blasted a two-run shot in a 15-0, five-inning SMCC victory. The Cougars scored nine runs in the first, four in the second and two in the third.

Chavez went deep in the first and second frames and finished 2-for-3 with six RBIs. She is tied for the team lead with six home runs and is tied for second among ACCAC Division II student-athletes with Mariah Martinez.

Hogan added a two-run triple and went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and a run scored. She now has five home runs, and her team-high 25 RBIs ranks second in the ACCAC among Division II players.

Lorona was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs. She is batting .364 with 10 extra-base hits and 15 RBIs for the year.

Freshman Kayliana Sablan finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two walks, a double and a stolen base. Martinez scored three times and had a pair of hits, while Mount scored twice and picked up an RBI. Carolina Olivas had the Cougars' third stolen base.

Christian Smith (5-2) earned the win in the circle with 5.0 innings of work.

Game Two Recap

In the sixth inning, a pair of squeeze plays helped lift SMCC to a 4-3 comeback victory to sweep the doubleheader. Freshman Monica Chon and Chavez successfully executed squeeze bunts to score Martinez and Lorona and give the Cougars a 4-2 advantage. Martinez had an RBI single earlier in the frame to tie the game.

Chavez and Mount finished with two hits, and Lorona added a double. Chavez, Olivas and Jaudrey Ah Quin recorded stolen bases in the win, and Sablan added an important RBI.

Rylie Atherton (4-5) earned the win with 6.1 innings of work in the circle. She struck out 10 batters and allowed three earned runs. Smith recorded her first win of the year by recording the final two outs.
