SMCC Softball Sweeps Pima CC, Falls to Eastern Arizona

The South Mountain Community College softball team (18-12, 11-9 ACCAC) defeated Pima CC 9-2 and 7-5 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Mar. 15. The Cougars swept the Aztecs three days after losing a pair of 8-0 games at Eastern Arizona on Mar. 12.

Pima CC Game One Recap

Kate Hogan led the Cougars with four base hits as SMCC jumped out to a 9-1 lead after four innings. Pima CC pushed across one more run before falling 9-2.

Hogan finished 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and her seventh home run of the season. Kayliana Sablan collected three hits from her leadoff spot and scored a run.

Mariah Martinez hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season and was 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks. Taylor Mount added a pair of hits and scored a run, and three other Cougars had a base hit.

Christian Smith (8-3) earned the win in the circle with a complete-game performance. She had four strikeouts and scattered five hits, and one earned run over the seven frames.

Pima CC Game Two Recap

Five Cougars had two hits, and SMCC rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to win 7-5. The Cougars scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Carolina OlivasTara LoronaLauren Russell, Hogan and Sablan had two hits in the victory. Four Cougars had doubles (Olivas, Hogan, Lorona, Russell), and Hogan added a triple and two RBIs.

Olivas, Mount, Lorona and Monica Chon had RBIs, and seven different Cougars scored a run.

Smith (9-3) earned her second win of the season with 3.2 innings of relief. She allowed one earned run and five hits to improve to 9-3 on the season. Martinez recorded her fifth save of the year with 1.1 innings of no-hit relief work.

Rylie Atherton started the game and tossed 2.0 innings with three K's and earned runs.

Eastern Arizona Game One Recap

The Gila Monsters scored three runs in the first and third and added runs in the fourth and fifth to post an 8-0, five-inning victory.

Martinez and Jaudrey Ah Quin had base hits for the Cougars, and Sablan drew a walk. Smith took the loss in the circle with 5.0 innings, eight earned runs and two strikeouts.

Eastern Arizona Game Two Recap

The Gila Monsters scored six runs in the first inning and added runs in the second and fifth to post another 8-0, five-inning victory.

Martinez led SMCC with a pair of base hits, including a double, and Monica Chon, Olivas and Sablan also had hits. Mount added a stolen base.

Atherton took the loss in the circle. She tossed five innings with four strikeouts and eight earned runs.
