Cougar Softball Falls Twice to Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (24-14, 15-11 ACCAC) lost 9-6 and 10-2 to Phoenix College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on April 2. Cougar freshman Mariah Martinez and Kayliana Sablan hit home runs in the 9-6 loss, Kate Hogan had a pair of hits, and Sablan scored a run and had an RBI in the 10-2 loss. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars fell behind 5-0 in the first after a two-out error allowed five unearned runs to score. Trailing 9-1 in the fifth, the Cougars scored three times to extend the game and added two in the seventh before falling 9-6. 

Sablan blasted a solo shot in the fourth, her second of the year, and finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Martinez hit a two-run home run in the fifth, her team-leading 12th of the year, and added a two-run single in the seventh. She finished 2-for-4 with the four RBIs. 

Hogan extended the game in the fifth with a two-out RBI double, one of her two doubles, and scored a pair of runs. Carolina Olivas and Taylor Mount had a base hit and scored a run, and Olivas added a stolen base. 

Christian Smith (11-4) took the loss in the circle for SMCC. She started and went three innings with three strikeouts and five unearned runs. Rylie Atherton tossed three innings in relief with four K's, and Martinez threw the seventh and had a strikeout.

Game Two Recap

SMCC took an early 1-0 lead, but the Bears responded with four runs in the second and four in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. They added a pair of runs in the seventh to win 10-2. 

Sablan finished 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, a run and an RBI, while Hogan was 2-for-4. Mount had a base hit and scored a run, Tara Lorona added a hit for the second-straight game, and Olivas picked up a sac bunt. 

Atherton (6-6) took the loss with two innings of relief, finishing with two strikeouts and four earned runs. Smith started the game for SMCC and lasted two innings with a strikeout, and four earned runs. Martinez threw the final three innings and allowed two earned runs.
