SMCC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (25-15, 16-12 ACCAC) split a home doubleheader with Glendale CC on April 5, winning game one 14-5 (6) before falling 6-5 in the second game. Kayliana SablanTara Lorona and Annalise Chavez hit home runs for the Cougars in the 14-5 victory, and Lauren Russell and Lorona went deep in the 6-5 defeat. 

Game One Recap

Trailing 3-2 in the third, SMCC scored six runs to take an 8-3 lead. The Gauchos closed within 8-5, but a Cougar run in the fifth and five in the sixth ended the contest. 

Four Cougars had two hits in the win: Kate HoganMariah Martinez, Sablan and Lorona. In the sixth, Sablan hit a three-run home run to end the game and finished with four RBIs. Lorona added a double to her deep fly and posted two runs and RBIs, while Hogan scored twice and Martinez had two runs and two RBIs. 

Chavez hit her 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Taylor Mount scored three runs with an RBI and a stolen base.

Carolina Olivas had a pair of stolen bases and scored twice, and Jaudrey Ah Quin had the team's fourth stolen base. Russell also added a two-run double for the victorious Cougars.

Christian Smith (12-4) picked up the win in the circle for SMCC. She tossed five innings and allowed four earned runs with one strikeout. Rylie Atherton tossed the sixth inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

The Gauchos jumped out to a 5-0 lead and added an insurance run in the sixth for a 6-5 victory. SMCC scored a run in the second and four in the sixth but could not complete the comeback.

Hogan, Martinez and Lorona finished with two hits in the loss. Lorona hit a solo home run in the second, her second day and sixth season and finished with two runs scored. Hogan and Martinez went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Carolina Olivas scored a run. 

Russell hit a two-run home run in the sixth, her sixth of the year, and Monica Chon had a single and scored a run. 

Martinez (7-4) took the loss in the circle. She threw a complete game and allowed 11 hits with three strikeouts.
