SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College softball team (25-17, 16-14 ACCAC) lost twice in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Central Arizona on April 9. The Cougars lost the first game 11-3 as Lauren Russell had a pair of RBIs, and Kayliana Sablan added a double. In the second game, SMCC fell 12-11 as the Vaqueras rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh. 

Game One Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but Central Arizona responded with a seven-run second inning. The teams traded runs in the third, and the Vaqueras added two in the fourth and one in the fifth to win the contest. 

Kate Hogan led the Cougars with a pair of base hits, and four others added one. Russell picked up her 23rd and 24th RBIs, and Sablan recorded her fourth double of the season. 

Taylor Mount scored a pair of runs, Carolina Olivas scored once, and Mariah Martinez had a sac fly. 

Christian Smith (12-5) took the loss in the circle. She started the game and went two innings with four hits and six earned runs. Rylie Atherton tossed the final 2.1 innings with a strikeout and three earned runs. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC led 3-2 after four innings, and a five-run fifth gave it a 9-2 advantage. However, CAC scored four in the fifth, one in the sixth and rallied for five in the seventh to win 12-11. 

Martinez led the Cougars with a pair of solo home runs, her 13th and 14th of the year. She added three runs and two RBIs to give her 52 for the season. 

Hogan hit her 10th home run of the year and added four RBIs to give her 52 for the year. She scored a pair of runs, hit her team-leading 14th double and stole a base. 

Taniyah Ladrigue finished 2-for-3 with a run and her first RBI and double of the year. Monica Chon also had a pair of base hits and added a run and RBI. 

Mount and Sablan added doubles, Olivas scored twice, and Russell picked up her third RBI of the day. 

Martinez (7-5) took the loss in the circle for SMCC. She started and threw the entire game, fanning two and allowing eight earned runs.
