Cougar Softball Sweeps Season Series against Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College softball team (30-20, 21-17 ACCAC) defeated Arizona Western 6-2 and 16-13 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on April 23. Freshman Mariah Martinez hit a pair of home runs and finished with three RBIs in the game one victory, and Annalise Chavez and Jaudrey Ah Quin went deep in the second game. SMCC swept its season series with Arizona Western College with the two wins. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the first, third and fifth to post a 6-2 victory in the opening game of the twinbill. 

Christian Smith (14-7) tossed a complete game to earn the win in the circle. She fanned three and allowed one earned run over seven innings. 

Martinez hit her team-leading 16th and 17th home runs of the season and finished 3-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs and a walk. 

Taylor Mount finished with two hits, two runs and two stolen bases, and Tara Lorona added a run, an RBI, a stolen base and a sac fly. Kayliana Sablan recorded an RBI pinch-hit, and Ah Quin had a steal. 

Game Two Recap

After two innings, the Cougars mounted a ferocious rally and came back from a 7-1 deficit. SMCC scored a run in the third, six in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth to post a 16-13 victory. 

Smith (15-7) recorded her second win of the day with six innings of relief work. She allowed five earned runs and struck out a batter. Rylie Atherton started the game for the Cougars and had a strikeout and six earned runs. 

SMCC had 19 hits in the game, and seven Cougars had multi-hit performances. Freshman Carolina Olivas led the squad with four hits and finished with three runs and a pair of stolen bases. 

Mount, Chavez and Ah Quin finished with three hits in the win. Mount drove in four and scored a run, while Chavez blasted her 13th home run of the season and finished with three runs and four RBIs. Ah Quin scored four times and hit a solo home run, her ninth of the year. 

Kate Hogan finished with a pair of doubles, raising her season total to a team-high 19, and had three RBIs. Lauren Russell and Sablan went 2-for-3, with Russell scoring a run and Sablan adding a stolen base, a run and an RBI.
