Cougar Women's Hoops Splits Season-Opening Trip to Nevada

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (1-1) split its season-opening trip to Nevada, defeating Western Wyoming 50-47 on Nov. 5 and falling 74-42 to College of Southern Nevada on Nov. 6. Freshman Brea Patterson led three Cougars in double-figures with 14 points and five steals in Western Wyoming CC. The next day, Patterson scored 11 points and added four rebounds, five assists and five steals against the host Coyotes.

Freshman Star Anderson scored 11 points, and fellow rookie Andrea Willeto also had 11 points as the Cougars won their first game. SMCC trailed 26-18 at halftime and 38-32 after three periods but stormed back with an 18-9 final quarter to win the contest. 

The Cougars shot 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the field and 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from the 3-point line. They also knocked down eight free throws. 

Patterson, a 5-5 freshman guard from Mesa, went 6-for-10 from the field and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to pace SMCC. She added four rebounds, two assists and a team-high five steals in 32 minutes of work. 

Anderson drilled three 3-pointers and added two assists and a steal, while Willeto led the Cougars with seven rebounds and had one block, steal and assist in 27 minutes. Sophomore Daniela Bernal added five points, four rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. 

Sophomore Makayla Norman came off the bench to grab six rebounds and dish out three assists. Freshman Kalee McEwan scored seven points and had four rebounds in 18 minutes of action.  

Southern Nevada Recap

SMCC shot 24.6 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from 3-point range in defeat. The Cougars trailed 33-19 at halftime and 50-29 after three quarters. 

Patterson finished with 11 points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds in 30 minutes of work. Anderson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points, two assists, two rebounds and two steals. 

Willeto posted six points and six rebounds, while Bernal had four points, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman Ky Skinner had six points and three rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
