Cougar Women's Basketball Downs Yavapai College in Double Overtime

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team defeated Yavapai College 71-69 in double overtime on Jan. 14 at Walraven Gym in Prescott, Ariz. Sophomores Genesis Adams and Andrea Willeto posted double-doubles, sophomore Myla Lee added 12, and freshman Hailey Connor scored a season-high 11 points as the Cougars outlasted the Roughriders.

The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw SMCC lead 15-8 after the first quarter but trail 30-25 at halftime. In the second half, the Cougars posted a 14-6 win in the third quarter, but the Roughriders claimed the fourth quarter 18-15 to force the extra period. SMCC hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late in the first overtime to force a second additional period, where it scored first and never relinquished the lead.

Adams was 5-of-10 from the field and hit all eight free throws to finish with 18 points. Seven of her 13 rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she added two assists and two blocks in 47 minutes for the Cougars. The double-double was her sixth of the season and second of the week. She leads the ACCAC in rebounding at 9.8 per contest.

Willeto knocked down three 3-pointers, and nine of her 10 rebounds were defensive. The double-double was her third of the season and second of the week, and she added three blocks, an assist and a steal in 48 minutes.

Lee played all 50 minutes and finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three assists and three steals. Connor knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and had six rebounds and three steals to go with her 11 points.

Freshmen Carmen Kittrell and Kayla Pettet came off the bench to score four points apiece, and sophomore Nyaker Aguek added two points and three rebounds off the bench.

SMCC shot 31.6 percent from the field and made 16-of-22 free throws. The Cougars grabbed 44 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive glass, and added 11 assists, eight steals and five blocked shots.
