SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team lost 77-54 to Scottsdale CC in an ACCAC game at the SMCC Gym on Jan. 18. Sophomore forward Genesis Adams led SMCC with 21 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Andrea Willeto added 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Artichokes used 13 3-pointers and a big fourth quarter to secure the road win. 

SMCC jumped out to a 20-18 lead after the first quarter behind some sharp shooting. SCC responded with a 17-11 second quarter to take a 35-31 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Artichokes won the third quarter 17-9 and, after Willeto completed a four-point play to draw the game to eight, eventually won the fourth quarter 25-14.  

SMCC shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field and made four 3-pointers. The Cougars grabbed 43 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had five blocked shots. 

Adams was 6-of-13 from the field and 9-of-13 from the free throw line. Four of her nine rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she tied a season-high with three blocks. 

Willeto was 5-of-12 from the field and made three 3-pointers for the fourth time this season. All eight of her boards were defensive, and she added a steal. 

Freshman Kayla Pettet came off the bench to finish with seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Those totals all represent new season highs. 

Sophomore Myla Lee led SMCC with seven assists to tie a season-high. She added three points, five rebounds and a steal.
