Cougar Women's Hoops Falls at CGCC, Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team lost 52-49 at Chandler-Gilbert on Jan. 25 and 95-45 at Central Arizona on Jan. 28 in a pair of ACCAC games last week. Against the Coyotes, sophomore Myla Lee led the Cougars with 14 points, but CGCC fended off an SMCC rally to hold on for the victory. Against the Vaqueras, Lee scored 20 points to go with five rebounds, but CAC led by 26 at halftime to help lift them to the win.

SMCC battled back in the fourth quarter and had a shot to tie the game at the buzzer, but the attempt came up short, and the Coyotes held on for the 52-49 win. The Cougars shot 27.8 percent from the field, grabbed 34 rebounds, and had five assists and 10 steals. 

Lee made three field goals, a 3-pointer and seen free throws to lead SMCC in scoring. She added two rebounds, two assists and a steal. 

Sophomore Genesis Adams finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and freshman Hailey Connor posted 12 points, three rebounds, a steal and a 3-pointer. 

Sophomore Andrea Willeto posted nine points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist, and freshman Kayla Pettet had four rebounds off the bench. 

Central Arizona Recap

Lee scored a season-high 20 points, but the Vaqueras used a big first half to post the 95-45 victory. SMCC shot 28.3 percent from the field and finished with 25 rebounds, seven assists and six steals.  Lee finished with five rebounds, two assists and two 3-pointers.

Willeto finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist, and Adams posted eight and three rebounds. 

Freshman Jolie King returned from injury and posted five points off the bench.
