Cougar Women’s Golf Improves on Second Day of Mesa Women’s Invitational

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team placed fourth at the Mesa Women's Invitational at Dobson Ranch Golf Course on Feb. 23-24. The Cougars improved by 31 strokes as a team from the first day to the second, and Tate Isaacson led SMCC with a ninth-place finish.

The Cougars' foursome of Isaacson, Miriam Verdugo, Cassidy Martinez and Victoria Negrete combined to finish at 409 over the final 18 holes. That was a marked improvement from the first round and kept them ahead of Estrella Mountain Community College on the leaderboard.

Isaacson had a pair of consistent rounds, firing a 100 on the first day, followed by a 99 on the second 18. She recorded three pars and six bogeys in the second round to finish at 55-over 199.

Verdugo finished right on Isaacson's heels, placing 10th at the event with a 58-over 202. In the second round, she carded three pars and five bogeys.

Martinez placed 13th overall and moved up eight spots on the leaderboard after posting a 21-over 93 in the second round. That represented a 26-stroke improvement from the first day of the event.

Negrete placed 22nd at the event at 47-over 236. She fired a 117 on the first day and a 119 on the second day of the tournament.
